Chance the Rapper is giving back to the city once again.
The local musician will serve as the grand marshal for the Bud Billiken Parade on Saturday, where he plans to give away 30,000 “stuffed” backpacks to parade attendees and presumptive Chicago students in the spirit of “back to school” season. He announced the giveaway Tuesday via Twitter.
Chance-founded local charity SocialWorks and Brooklyn backpack purveyor State Bags are partnering with the rapper on the project.
What’s inside the backpacks has not been revealed yet, and parade spokesperson Kristal Davis told DNAInfo that Chance also has a secret, surprise announcement at the parade that will be related to the backpacks.
“We do have a big announcement on parade day,” Davis said. “Whatever he has planned on Saturday, the giveaway’s related to that.”
Chance also took to Twitter on Tuesday to implore the city to come out, tweeting, “TAKE ALL YOUR LIL COUSINS TO THE BUD CUZ THAT WHAT BIG COUSINS DO.”
This year’s 88th annual Bud Billiken Parade steps off at 10 a.m. Saturday from King Drive at Oakwood Blvd., and post-parade activities will follow in Washington Park.
