Bannock and Backpacks
November 18 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Indigenous student leaders from the University of Manitoba are hosting a donation drive called Bannock and Backpacks. They are collecting gently used backpacks, hygiene products (soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, deodorant, combs, feminine hygiene products, etc.), blankets, and outerwear (toques, mittens, gloves, socks). Juice boxes and snack bars will also be accepted.
As of October 2015, 75% of Winnipeg’s homeless identified as Indigenous. Indigenous Circle of Empowerment (ICE) members wanted to show these people that the Indigenous community cares about them and is working towards fighting the stigma that exists around homelessness.
Drop off locations are at Migizii Agamik (114 Sidney Smith St.) and Science Student Lounge (209E Arms Building), which are located on the University of Manitoba’s Fort Garry campus. You can also follow Bannock and Backpacks on Facebook for updates or message if items are needing to be picked up.
On Nov 18, 2018 at Main Street and Dufferin Ave, ICE will be partnering up with the “bannock lady”, Althea Guiboche to give out the supplies to our relations on the street.
This donation drive is being organized by the Indigenous Circle of Empowerment (ICE) which is a student leadership program at the university. ICE is a student leadership development program grounded in culture and focused on self-development and community engagement. ICE is for Indigenous students who demonstrate drive, determination, and leadership.
