Mental Health Groups Are Suggesting To Avoid Watching “13 Reasons Why”

Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” has created a lot of conversations in the last few weeks.

The show is based on a book by Jay Asher and produced by Selena Gomez. It tells the story of a girl named Hannah who kills herself and leaves behind 13 tapes explaining why she took her own life.

Since ‘13 Reasons Why’ has become so popular, headspace (Australia’s National Youth Mental Health Foundation) says they have “received a growing numbers of calls and emails directly related to the program” and are suggesting people to “be aware of the dangers and risks associated for children and young people who have been exposed” to the show.

Dr. Steven Leicester, head of online counseling services at Headspace, said: “There is a responsibility for broadcasters to know what they are showing and the impact that certain content can have on an audience – and a young audience in particular.”

Many people are recommending  to stay away from the show if you are dealing/ dealt with depression, suicidal thoughts or sexual assault.
