On Wednesday night (May 3), Selena Gomez fired up Twitter for the first time in ages to let fans know that new music is on the way. “Something new is coming,” the pop star tweeted along with a link to her newsletter. “Sign-up to be the first to know.” Well, it doesn’t look like we will have long to wait. According to a countdown on the 24-year-old’s website, the first taste of SG2 (the fan title for the follow-up to Revival) drops on May 18. Interestingly, that’s exactly one week after Miley Cyrus’ “Malibu” drops.
It’s not the first time Selena has found herself in a chart duel with a fellow Disney alum. In 2015, she went head to head with Demi Lovato when “Good For You” was released within weeks of “Cool For The Summer.” The producer of 13 Reasons Why won that battle, but this will be closer given the buzz about Miley’s return. Musically, the songs will be polar opposites. The Bangerz diva has turned her back on club music in favor of singer/songwriter fare, while Sel is working with rhythmic pop hitmakers like Jacob Kasher, Justin Tranter and Julia Michaels.
