Toronto rapper Partynextdoor arrested at U.S. border, charged with drug possessionPerformer’s tour bus was inspected at Lewiston-Queenston and he was charged, though police say his touring schedule shouldn’t be affected.

Toronto rapper/singer Partynextdoor was arrested at the Canada-U.S. border and charged narcotics possession on Thursday morning.

The performer, signed to Drake’s OVO label, is currently on tour supporting pop singer Halsey, which had a stop at the ACC on Wednesday night and one upcoming in Boston on Friday night.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, the bus the 24-year-old rapper — born Jahron A. Brathwaite — was travelling in was crossing into the U.S. via the Lewiston-Queenston bridge, near Niagara Falls, when it was stopped for a secondary inspection by U.S. Customs and Border patrol. After a search, officials called New York State Troopers to charge him with possession of Xanax and Oxycodone.

He was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and issued a ticket to appear in Lewiston Court. No date for the appearance was set, but it would likely happen in the next two weeks, and the misdemeanour charge is punishable by up to a year in prison.

“The charges should not affect his ability to remain on tour,” said James O’Callaghan, public information officer, Troop A, New York State Police. “He was issued an appearance ticket and released.”

O’Callaghan would no say how much drugs were found, but said: “If it was an abundance, the charge would have been higher. It is an A-misdemeanour, and it is punishable by up to a year in jail, for every pill they would have. But that is up to the courts, it could be mix of a civil fine or possible jail time. “

As well, police also charged Jerome P. Nevins, 24, of Etobicoke with the same crime, after reportedly finding him in possession of Xanax.

Brathwaite was born in Mississauga and was the first artists signed to OVO in 2013. Since then he has released two albums and nominated for two Grammy Awards, both for work with Drake. He is also a songwriter and producer, and was credited as a writer for Rihanna’s “Work,” which hit number one on Billboard’s Hot 100.
