Our city parks are in rough shape right now.
Winnipeg is known to have MANY parks, and they actually cover about 3,500 hectares of land!
A report from the city has come out and it says about 12 per cent of these parks and open spaces are in need upgrades that will cost roughly $97 million.
A deeper look into the report showed more than half, about 57 per cent, are in good or very good condition. Approximately 26 per cent are in fair condition, and 12 per cent are in poor or very poor condition. Five per cent have not been rated.
Over the past five years, the city spent between $6 million and $`11 million on parks and open spaces. An additional $5 million is spent annually on Assiniboine Park.
A plan to tackle these parks is expected to be completed in the spring of 2020.
Here is a list of the top five parks that will require the most amount of money to repair or replace:
Kildonan Park requiring approx. $10,746,000;
Kilcona Park, requiring approx. $8,001,000;
Assiniboine Park and Forrest, requiring approx. $6,074,000;
Kings Park and Maple Grove Park, requiring approx. $3,344,000; and
St.Vital Park, requiring approx. $2,752,000.
