We have our very own Tinder Swindler! An Ontario man has been linked to an online dating scam targeting over 150 different women.
He frauded them out of thousands of dollars and convinced them to buy him lavish gifts, including a $10,000 motorcycle from one.
The worst part of this story is the fact that he was charged with something very similar in 2013 where he was ordered to pay 4 women $7,330.56 (of which he’s only paid $1,000 to date). Once that ruling was behind him, he soon began doing the same thing to various women in Toronto and the GTA. While he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in these new charges, his victims hope the court considers his past when making a verdict.
This all came to light after a few of the women realized his stories didn’t add up. One of the women then created a Facebook group called “Are we dating the same man?”. That quickly gained a lot of attention and one by one, various women he had scammed started coming forward, sharing their history and photos with him with the various names and life stories they were told and initially, took at face value.
Now before you judge and say “how could you be so stupid” it’s important to remember that scammers are very good at what they do, they go after vulnerable people and are master manipulators and liars.
According to these women, his personality was larger than life. He was the first person to send them messages in the morning and always made them feel adored. So when he asked them to invest in various things or talked about how much he wanted that $10,000 motorcycle it was easy for them to trust him and want to help give him the world.
If you’re suspicious about someone you’ve encountered, be it a relationship or friend, there are TONS of Facebook and Reddit pages where you can share your story.
