Charlie Gardiner was a NHL goaltender who died just months after his team won the Stanley Cup! In 1911, Gardiner immigrated to Winnipeg, from Scotland! His family lived in several different homes in the north end of downtown. He played with the Winnipeg Maroons of the Central Hockey League and then joined the Chicago Blackhawks in 1927. Even though Gardiner had tonsillitis during the 1934 Stanley Cup final, he still helped win the championship!
Unfortunately, he died shortly after the win, and is buried at the city’s Brookside Cemetery.
The new sign will be completed by the fall.
